the joy of creativity is for everyone

It’s a common idea around music & other creative arts as they are taught and perceived: that creativity is reserved for those with a particular level of natural ability, or those with a goal of becoming a professional in that art.

We beg to differ! We believe the joy of creativity belongs to everyone, and that the joy is the point.

Heart Notes was birthed out of a desire to see people find joy in creatively expressing themselves, free of pressure to perform at a certain standard. In our sessions, we learn by having a go, not by trying to be perfect! “Heart”, in several languages, also means “courage”, and when we feel “heartened” it means something has lifted our spirits.

This informs our two main aims:

  • 1) Confidence! To build people up so they are encouraged in their capability, creativity, and resilience

  • 2) Joy! To create a space where we can have a hearty laugh together, as often as possible :-D

Modern research has spoken loud and clear on what we humans have known for millennia: that expressing ourselves in music and other creative arts is healing for our minds, relaxing for our brains & bodies, and releasing for our emotions.

And when we can express ourselves courageously and generously, with heart, the world is a better place.

We can’t wait to make it better with all of you.

Classes for kids

Joy & confidence: feat. music and other creative arts

With Heart Notes classes, no two sessions are the same. With a special focus on music, we also use storytelling, rhythm, instruments, movement, games, dancing, and more!

All of these are geared towards exactly the same goal: your child growing in confidence, and learning how to find their own creativity and joy in the learning process. These are not formal classes aimed at heading towards an exam or a test, but rather are focused on experiencing the joy that creativity and arts bring to our lives, and inspiring kids to create their own. In a world that relentlessly teaches our kids to consume, the heart of these classes is to give them instead the skills and confidence to contribute something that is uniquely theirs…a gift they can carry throughout their lives!

For the love of music, creativity, and the love of life

For all those who’ve been wanting a chance to sing along to your favourite songs without the pressure of needing to perform, this is for you!

These sessions are aimed at creating a fun, safe space where we reminisce, sing along, and celebrate the most precious things in life. There may even be a little bit of other arts thrown in, like dancing, costumes, or art! Very flexible and tailored to the specific interests and needs of individual groups.

Classes held in a variety of locations, for the enjoyment and enrichment of our senior communities. CAUTION: there may be serious fun involved!

Our class courage creed

We Will:

  • have a go at lots of things we haven’t tried before

  • make mistakes, accept ourselves & each other anyway, and learn from them

  • work together to create something new, and enjoy each other’s creativity

  • explore many new ideas, be curious, and celebrate what we find

  • play, laugh, and remember to not take ourselves too seriously!

about heart notes

Q: Who will be teaching the classes?

A: Moraig will be! She is a graduate of WAAPA (The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts), has been teaching vocals for many years, and been entertaining children & adults for even longer. If you’d like to read a bit more about her, click here.

Q: Where will classes be held?

A: Classes are held at a variety of locations around the Perth suburbs, such as libraries, community centres, nursing homes, and privately owned properties. These depend on availability and local interest. What they all have in common is space for everyone to get involved in the activities! To find out which locations classes are currently running in, check the bookings page right here.

Q: how will the classes be run?

A: Students are welcome to arrive a few minutes early, but will need to wait until the teacher gives the all-clear to enter the class space (this is for safety reasons). At the designated class start time, the teacher will call all the students together. The students will join the teacher on the mat if it’s a kids’ class, or take a chair if it’s an adults’ class. Classes will run for 60, 90, or 120 minutes, depending on the individual booking.

Q: What if the classes are being hosted by a particular venue or organisation?

A: Yes, some of our classes are run this way! If this is the case, your booking will go directly through them and you don’t need to let us any details, only them. They will let you know everything you need about when and where to go, and what to do if you need to miss a class.

Q: Do PArents need to stay for their kids’ class or can they leave?

A: Parents must stay for the duration of their child’s class, and are welcome to either stay in the class space to watch, hang out with the other parents, or wait outside the doors. This is to comply with duty of care regulations, and also to make sure all of our precious children stay where they are meant to be. The person who takes the child home must be the same person who brought them to the class. To read more about parent/guardian responsibility, read our terms & conditions here.

Q: why do i need to book a set of classes rather than a single one?

A: Booking in sets helps us make sure the class you want is able to go ahead, since we have minimum numbers that must be met. Booking a set at a time also makes our preparation much higher quality, because we can tailor activities in advance to the unique needs and abilities of the individuals in that class. Basically, the more notice we get about you or your child booking in, the better the classes are going to be for them! If you are ready to ensure your spot so you can begin your musical journey, click here to book now.

Q: Can I still join the class if term has already started?

A: Yes! Just let us know when you’ll be starting and we’ll book you in.

Q: CAN I BOOK into classes on a casual basis?

A: There will potentially be a couple of casual spots open for every class, where you can just pay for a class at a time. However, we aren’t able to guarantee their availability for you, so the only reliable way to make sure you get a spot is to book for the set. If you want to book in on a casual basis, contact us here.

Q: what happens i miss a class?

A: See our Terms & Conditions right here, detailing our policies for cancellation, missed classes, and rescheduling.

Q: IS there a discount for siblings/members from the same family?

A: Yes, there is! Booking your second child or family member in will give you a discount of 15%.

Q: is it okay for me to bring my pre-school child along?

A: Yes, it is! Children who are under the age of 5 are welcome to join in along with a parent for the first third of any kids’ class, free of charge. After that, there are play areas they are more than welcome to use.

Q: do i need to, or can I, bring anything for my class?

A: For kids’ classes: We will provide everything your child needs to participate in the class! If you wish to send your child with a special cushion or wriggle pad to sit on, you are most welcome to bring one along. If your child uses any further special aids or equipment, let us know as soon as possible in advance of the class, so we can make sure to accommodate for it.

For adults' classes: Bring along a folder to put any music or lyrics sheets we may hand out, a pen or pencil to write some notes, and a sense of humour!

Q: How many students will be in a class?

A: For kids’ classes: this depends on where they are held! Classes held at the main office will be between 2-7 students, while in a bigger venue maximum numbers will be 12-15. If you have a bigger group you’d like to keep together, speak to us so we can work out a solution. We may need an extra teacher, but this is an option open to us!

For adults’ classes: This can really depend on the space we have to use! In all venues, we will abide by the safety regulations detailing how many people are allowed in a space at one time.

Q: I have a group of friends who want to do classes all together. Is this an option?

A: Yes, it is! We have the flexibility to move locations, so if there is enough demand, we will look into opening up a special class time & place just for you and your group. Advance notice is key here, so come talk to us as soon as you can!

Q: will the classes cater for special needs?

A: Fortunately, our classes by nature are more accessible than most classroom learning. If you or your child need something specific, please let us know and we’ll be happy to chat with you, to see if we can adjust for your needs. It’s a deeply held value of ours to be inclusive, rooted in our belief that people of all needs matter equally and deserve access to education…and to fun!
